Docks of New York - Josef von Sternberg (1928)

One night and one day on the docks of old NY. Lush textures: glistening black of the stokers, superimposed textures of nets and iron beds, reflections in the water. The beer glasses in the bar are incredible. One of the last great silent films, released just about simultaneously with The Jazz Singer.

Live piano accompaniment by Donald Sosin.
