I really enjoyed it too. You could get a taste of Wilder's fantastic dialogue coming through and Erich von Stroheim ("the man you love to hate") is a treat in a role like this. Liked the play of the upstairs/downstairs viewpoints throughout.

I took a look at the Wikipedia page and the story is based on play originally set in WWI. The play had been adapted for film three previous times!
